Masques

Thirty exciting local authors strut their stuff. Editor Gillian Polack says "This anthology provides such an intriguingly wide range of characters and fabulous writing, there is something for everyone."

Jack Dann, multiple award-winning author who has written and edited over seventy-five books including his international best seller The Memory Cathedral says about Masques:

"Forget The Financial Review, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The West Australian, The Canberra Times; forget all the bad news on the radio and television; forget the recession, depression, inflation, deflation, monetization, securitization, and the jobless rate. Forget all that because we are in the lucky country; and if you need proof (and perhaps also a bit of relaxation, 'fantasization', and exhilaration!), then start reading Masques, edited by Gillian Polack and Scott Hopkins. Here are our own home-grown fantasists...who will knock your argyle socks off."

Masques reviewed by Colin Steele

The following review by Colin Steele appeared in the Canberra Times:
"The Canberra Speculative Fiction Guild has established an admirable annual tradition of publishing short story anthologies which is continued in Masques. The overall standard naturally fluctuates, with 30 contributors, but all tackle, via prose and poetry, the theme of masques or masks with imaginative gusto. 'Death Masque' by Joanne Anderton sees the main character Henry trying to obtain a 'death' mask to save his son, but ultimately is this the right decision for a personal eternity? Cat Sparks in 'Seventeen' evokes a Dickensian future of economic segregation when homeless children adopt the persona of forgotten relatives for the befuddled rich. Other notable contributions come from Marcus Olsson, Nicole Murphy and Donna Maree Hanson. Masques is available through local bookshops of from www.csfg.org.au/publishing/anthologies/masques"
