Writer or storyteller – this is an interesting post ! Storytellers (since they sat around the fire in Home Cave and had everyone enthralled) IMO win hands down -Homer was a storyteller -the writing of the Iliad was simply a list of people and battles but (again, for me) it’s the storytelling details that hook me in -though there are such magnificent lines as ‘Thus died Hector, the tamer of horses’ that make you (me) realise that Homer didn’t just tell an enthalling story, he also used a writerly technique. Homer was probably several people, but that doesn’t detract from the tale – a great story about men, gods and heroes, written by a master (did you know the sea in Homer wasn’t ‘blue’ -it’s routinely described as ‘wine-dark sea’) which makes one wonder, did the Greeks see colours differently ? Keep writing, tina
