The year is already one third complete, which is a bit of a scary thought, but we have never been the kind of folks to turn away from a bit of fear here at CSFG. This month we were treated to speculative alien biology courtesy of our expert visitor to the monthly meeting, and can now turn to face the month ahead armed with knowledge, and a lot of new cool facts. Details for the May calendar are at the end of his broadcast.
Monthly Meeting Recap: Astrobiology
This month, we had Astrobiologist Georgia Soares visit to expand our understanding of how life on earth can teach us what life on Mars might be like. By looking at geographic and geological information, Georgia explained how scientists can hypothesise what alien life forms might look like, reacting to their environments, and understanding evolution. Certainly a lot of food for thought for our sci-fi authors, and perhaps inspiration for those who want to dip their toes into unknown alien waters.
May Monthly Meeting: Screenwriting 101
This upcoming month, you can look forward to a presentation on screenwriting hosted by CSFG’s own Americo Alvarenga, and featuring special guest José Molina.
We’ll walk through the fundamentals of what makes screenwriting different from novel or short story writing, and how it can benefit all writers to learn another way of telling stories. As an added bonus, we will open up questions from CSFG members to television producer and screenwriter, Jose Molina.
Jose’s extensive filmography includes Firefly, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Agent Carter, and so much more! This is an amazing opportunity for CSFGers who wants to know more about being a screenwriter today, what it entails, and what Jose has been cooking up recently. We will direct questions on the CSFG site and we will read out Jose’s responses during the meeting.
Thanks in advance for Jose and his time, and hope to see you at the general meeting!
Scribbles and Nibbles
For those of you new to the Guild, the best place to consistently catch up face to face is at our fortnightly Scribbles and Nibbles get together. This is a casual hangout, where folks get together for a coffee and a chat before settling down to do some writing. Location alternates between The National Library of Australia and Pulp Book Cafe, check the schedule for the details. The more the merrier!
